O65 plate winner was Richard Ford and special mentions go to Simon Lau O50 and Gareth Jones O55. Both Darren and Geoff will now represent Wales in their age groups later in the year.
Article in seaside news April 2020Porthcawl Squash had resounding success recently at the Welsh Masters, represented by Geoff Perrett, Darren Thomas, Richard Ford, Simon Lau and Gareth Jones.
Darren won the over 40 event and so qualifies to play for the Welsh team. On his way to the final Darren beat the no 1 seed with aggressive tactical squash. Richard fought well to win the over 65 Plate, and is in the running to make the Welsh team.
Two long-standing friends of Porthcawl Squash Tony Bevan and Graham Bastian, both of Bridgend Squash, fought a tough battle in the over 65 final. Tony eventually won and the pair made the Welsh team.
The loudest cheer came for Geoff who won the over 70 event and so will play again for the Welsh team. It is a tremendous achievement considering Geoff has recently returned to squash, recovering from a 14 month lay-off through illness. Geoff continues to be an inspiration to our club members and throughout Squash Wales. ITV News interviewed Geoff and Roy Gingell of Squash Wales about Geoff’s recent success and his remarkable 44 year squash career. Geoff has a steely determination on and off court. This, with the support of his wife Hazel and the NHS undoubtedly helped his successful return. Geoff is so happy to be back at squash - but here at Porthcawl we’re happier still. Kevin Cullinan
